The Search The problem of beliefs that Doctor Quimby observed in his patients has been recognized by modern savants as diverse as the Indian, J. Krishnamurti and the American third-force psychotherapist, Carl Rogers. Krishnamurti tell us: Belief is one thing and "what is" is another. Belief is a word, a thought, and this is not the thing, any more than your name is actually you. Your belief in God will give you the experience of what you call God. You will always experience what you believe and nothing else. Belief comes from fear and is the most destructive thing. Belief divides people, makes them hard, makes them hate each other and cultivate war. A mind clouded by fear of belief is incapable of any kind of understanding, any realization of what truth is. When the mind is free of belief then it can look. Carl Rogers, like Park Quimby, experienced the enlightenment of changed belief: My belief has developed and altered, until now it is almost the antithesis of what I was taught-and believed--in my youth. Charles Darwin quoted Marcus Aurelius (a Roman Emperor) on the effect of thought: Such are thy habitual thoughts, such also will be the character of thy mind; for the soul is dyed by the thoughts. |
